Toby Ellis: Challenge How many consecutive balls can you knock off the table with a fast deep serve?
At age 15, Toby is currently ranked 6 in England Junior boys and a member of the England Junior Squad. During lockdown the England coaches set squad members various challenges to test their technical, tactical, physical and mental skills. This was Marcus Gustafson's weekly challenge to the EJS members. Marcus is lead coach of the EJS squad.
I filmed this myself. There is no editing, no tricks. This is genuine and the result of many hours practise and trying.
Toby is sponsored by Tees Sport and plays for Jacobaeus A in the Preston Table Tennis League and Draycott A in the Junior British League.

2019 Children's Hardbat Final: C. Bradford vs L. Suffolk
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.5 лет назад
We run 12 week coaching sessions. The last session is traditionally a hardbat tournament. It's a bit of fun using bats covered in sandpaper and a good way of helping our kids learn about control and bat angle and to think about what they are doing. You can't just topspin loop everything with hard bat! 18 players took part in this event. Top table was played with the winner calling out change. L...

I feel like without a comparison with a normal rubber (something a lot more players would be accustomed to) this doesn't tell much...
THAT IS A GREAT ONE
Saya pernah mencoba rubber dengan sponge dan rabber tanpa sponge dengan karet yang sama, tapi sudut lemparannya tidak berubah??
I learn something new today....the climbing effect on tackiness.....interesting thanks for the great analysis
That’s my cousin never met her but my dad Brian Grundy would talk about her
Jim Clegg coached Joy Grundy for a long time and was very impressed with her ability. It's a shame she gave up the sport not long after this.
Too much talk..... Play the ball!
thanks Jim - you've got a real knack of explaining something that makes perfect sense in theory, and which then leads to some instant improvements on the table that i can now build upon
Jim, am watching this coaching series 16 years after you shot it and finding it tremendously informative, thank you! Hope you're still playing and showing the youngsters a trick or two!
Excellent, enjoyed that Jim, thanks - nice steady build-up and good explanation. Bethany and Toby - hope you're continuing to advance.
Bethany qualified for the senior nationals recently held and it's ranked 26 nationally in senior women at age 16. Toby reacher the QF of the recent senior men's nationals loosing to eventual winner Paul Drinkhall. Toby is nationally ranked 2 in men's u21 category and 12 in senior men. He's currently battling hard against circumstances to achieve his goal of becoming a professional player. Thank you for your interest.
Great coach, lots of positive reinforcement, I learned a lot!
Its a very good reference, the racket with pimples was position vertically, how about the actual Long//Short pimple held by the player? So that we can see actually the reaction.
Very good
Very good . Thank you
I missed the celluloid ball, so I came to watch this video.
This is great work.
Greate job! To find 2 and 3 parts I go to author channel, Video and search there "Hurricane 3 vs Hurricane 3 Neo" and got it. Part 2 - ruclips.net/video/3Mi8bDK83K0/видео.html Part 3 - ruclips.net/video/O9iuZ0qUXBA/видео.html
You should swing from the elbow more than from the shoulder, like you said
Very clearly explained and I might add that players of any level would benefit by starting their wam up with this level of basics and this way they will avoid having things go wrong with their (even advanced) shots. Thank you for coming out of retirement and giving us this gem.
Great stuff...thanks for sharing!
ive been playing table tennis for a number of years , i recently returned to playing after an 8 years, during games i was having trouble returning the short backspin on my forehand side . i asked a couple of coaches at my club what i was doing wrong yet none of them could give me the solution . i now understand that i am lacking in point number 4 of the summary of principles . Thanks Jim
Excellent video...wow...I will be INVINCIBLE after this! 😋
Amazing video thank you 🙏
Helping me out 10 years later. My mind clicked when I realized that returning a backspin serve like that retains the spin and becomes a top spin return.
I would change serve speeds and add more short serves with under spin to her. She sits on the long serves and it plays into her good offensive play.
3 P's position, pause, play
Good
I bought the same rubber in 1.8 on one side and max (2.3?) on the other side. I cannot tell the difference at all, even the re-bounce speed feels the same.
could you tell me where i can find info about hardness, just like in the minutes 3:28. i want to buy combination rubber for BH and FH, like in the another video. hardness FH is hardness BH +2. Thanks for the answer.
It can be found on the OOAK table tennis forum
I have kokataku 868 hercules blue sponge i boosted with 3 layers of paraffin oil. Slightly tacky but spin is really severe immense. It cost me 6$ on aliexpress i have ordered 8 of them. Boosted effects still there even after 3 months however less during first 3 weeks of play. Medium tacky i love it 😊😊
You’re clearly using your wrist in your examples lol
I want to see the results of this procedure but both red and yellow are 2.0
ㄝ。
well done. sucks that more people didn't drop likes, could have boosted the channel 8 yrs ago.
I love the science!
wow, this video is the real deal. no bullshit. no feelings. just facts and proof. really awesome
Best video.. no one..I repeat no one has explained it so well.. I will try and report back whether it helped me practically or how easy it is while practicing..
This works guys :).. tried and tested
Excelent Video 1 sub more
Very informative but......what does the shot actually look like? A demo returning the ball earlier on in video would be helpful. 10mins before we saw what it looked like!
Liam would u be down for a game. Central london somewhere. I haven’t played in years but I competed when I was younger and I’d like to start playing again?
Based on this review, unless plastic balls are significantly cheaper to produce, I don't see any reason for ITTF going to plastic.
this is how you teach table tennis
As a scientist, I respect and appreciate your superb work on this. I am trying to contact ball makers because, as a plastic materials expert, I know how to make these balls better, or even change to a superior material.
Great series! Would it be okay if I used some of the high speed footage for a video on my channel?
As long as you acknowledge the video clip as being made by me (PathfinderPro), yes that's fine. Thank you for asking first.
@@PathfinderPro Got it, thanks for the prompt reply!
Thank you Sir
Thank you ,that's great
Thanks for your explanation it makes things easier
He reminds me of Kenneth E. Hagen in terms of accent, voice and talking style and almost as well as looks.
You are extremely serious in finding the differences between the celluloid and plastic table tennis balls scientifically and experimentally; very well done job! Thanks for all of your insights.
Thank you
Thank you Sir for the back hand drive in for stages. Lovely explanation.
Great video with step by step explanations in detail for the beginners for Forehand drive.
